St Briavels Castle

​Built in the early 12th century, St Briavels was an important royal castle on the frontier with Wales and the administrative and judicial centre of the Forest of Dean – a royal hunting ground where the game was protected and only the king was allowed to hunt.

​St Mary the Virgin is St Briavels’ church.

​The church is open in the hours of daylight, so if you would like to take some time out in a peaceful setting you would be most welcome.

Explore the beautiful Forest of Dean

A perfect all year round, all weather holiday destination, the Forest of Dean hosts a number of great activities and entertainment.

For adventure-seekers there is mountain biking, cycle tracks, zip-wires and kayaking.

For explorers there’s a great range of attractions, from the magical Puzzlewood to caves and steam trains.

For something more relaxing, enjoy the Sculpture trail,  numerous walks, the spectacular views and many castles, museums and cathedrals.

​The Retreat is also  a great base from which to explore Cardiff, Bath, Hereford, Gloucester and Cheltenham, all of which are less than 90 minutes away.
